Looking for Beauty

Good morning.
I’ve started to notice a sharpening of my senses during this season of having so many distractions stripped away. As it turns out, there is deeper beauty that comes with a slowing. In actuality, the beauty is always there, but I’ve experienced a deeper appreciation for it, and even a deeper longing for it. I’m exceedingly grateful for a God who exemplifies creativity. And I’m so glad for the artists, musicians, writers, and chefs amongst us during these bleak days.

I’ve been spending more time paging through my Bible without agenda lately. I’m finding myself falling in love with it in a whole new way! The Bible is a work of art, friends. It’s rich with insight and inspiration. Just this morning I found myself in Psalm 19. This is how it begins:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

There is much to ponder and meditate upon just in those 2 verses, isn’t there? Have you seen the moon the past few nights? Have you been outside under the blue spring sky? Have you seen the bits of green and new growth poking through the dormant scapes of winter? Have you listened to your favorite song lately? Or read a verse of poetry? Maybe a novel? Have you paused to look at a painting, or read a beautifully illustrated book to your kids? Have you smelled dinner cooking in the oven, or tasted a ripe piece of fruit? Have you sat in a well-made piece of furniture, or sipped coffee from a hand-thrown mug? Have you gone for a walk in a comfortable pair of shoes, or received a hand-written note?

We are consumers of art and beauty every day, but maybe now is a time to cultivate a deeper fondness for this attribute of God. Even in the harshest of seasons, I believe there are remnants of beauty to be found. Do you see them?

Warmly,
Kate
