On Freedom

Hello, friends.
I’ve been finding great comfort in the familiarity of song and scripture recently. These words and stories have been engrained in my mind and soul for 40 years now. And I love thinking about all the believers who have read these same words and worshiped with the same songs for hundreds, and in some cases thousands of years before me. When our minds are saturated with these truths, the words become timely gifts for God to bring to the surface when He deems fit. Just last night I was in the kitchen and found myself humming Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, and the words of verse 3 came to mind.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let they grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.

I’m reading a book right now with a character who experiences an altering brain injury. Her family lives in an agrarian, ocean-side culture, and in order to keep her safe, she is tied (or, fettered) to her home. In her case, and in our case as believers, the fettering is a measure of safety and love. When we wander, we find ourselves in compromising situations. The image of the Lord fettering our hearts to him isn’t a trap, but a protection. When we are tethered to Jesus, we experience a new kind of freedom.

My prayer for you today, is for you to find freedom in nearness to Jesus.

Galatians 1:5
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

With love,
Kate
